The local station was $2.09/gal on Friday; 9 miles up the road, here is a gas price war raging and they all had gas for $1.75/gal. So I drove 18 miles to save 34 cents per gallon and bought 12 gallons.

I normally go to the cheapest station along my travel route. However, if I do not have a planned destination, I always go the closest station to my house to give business to the local guy. He is usually within 5 cents of stations further away; today he has the cheapest gas in the area!

Z51Corvette: You'd go to the "Closest station to me or one that is on a regularly driven route." If it's on a regularly driven route, it shouldn't make a difference how far away it might be; it's still on your regular route. Or do you mean you wouldn't go to the next closest station even if the price is cheaper?
If it's not going out of your way, it doesn't matter how far away the gas station is; it's still on your way; you were still going to go passed it.

I wont go very far for cheaper prices unless it pays for itself (which is not likely)

Redstar5: If it's in the direction you're going "anyway", what difference does it make how far away the gas station is? If it's one mile, five miles, one hundred miles, or a full tank of gas away, you said, it's in the direction you're going; or do you mean that you'd automatically stop to get get the cheaper gas before you drive five miles, regardless of how much gas you have left in your tank, with the possibility that you might get gas at the same or lower price further down the road?

gasisoutrageous: So you're saying that if you didn't have enough gas to dirve five miles, then you'd buy the higher priced gas?
I'm not so sure that I'd wait until my car got that low, that it only had five miles worth of gas left, before I'd pay a higher price. Somehow I think that if I was down to a gallon or two I'd be more worried about where I could get some gas than about what it cost.

5 miles or less, unless, there is not enough gas in the tank to make it. I also, though, might not mind driving up to Murphy USA in St Johns.

ShiftySidney: You'd drive 30 minutes from home to get cheaper gas?
Before I ask how how much cheaper it has to be, a 30 minute trip from home for me is upwards of miles, meaning it's about a 60 mile round trip, meaning that I'm using about 2 gallons of gas, and most people are using closer to 3 gallons of gas to drive that distance. That means if gas near you costs about $4 a gallon, you'd have to save about $12 at the cheaper gas station just to break even. If you buy 20 gallons of gas, you'd have to save 60 cents a gallon - just to break even. Even if you bought 40 gallons of gas, you'd have to be buying gas (at the station 30 minutes away) at 30 cents a gallon cheapr - just to break even. And even then you're wasting 3 gallons of gas.
Assuming you have nothing better to do than drive an hour there and back, gas might be costing more per gallon closer, but 1) you're not wasting gas to get there, and 2) you're not driving just to break even.
Think of it this way: You can buy a carton of cigarettes next door for $30, or you can drive 30 minutes away to buy a carton of cigarettes for $25. The 30 minute drive, again assuming you have nothing better to do than drive an hour to get cigarettes, costs you $12 in gas in order to save $5. Or, said another way, to save $5 on cigarettes, you spent an extra $7 out of your pocket and used an hour to do it.

If I am buying gas anywhere, it is most likely at a station where I do not drive out of my way in order to get it.
