China Idles 40% of Windpower Turbine Output Capacity

bloomberg, com -- China is idling as much as 40 percent of its wind-turbine factories following a surge in investment driven by the government’s renewable energy goals, the vice president of Shanghai Electric Group Corp. said.

Prices of turbines have tumbled more than 30 percent from 2004 levels in the world’s third-biggest windpower market by generating capacity because there are “too many” plants, Lu Yachen said in an interview in Beijing today.

China aims to increase its capacity to produce power from the wind fivefold by 2020, spurring investment in turbine factories. Zhang Guobao, who helms the National Energy Administration, said in September without giving figures that there was a surplus of such plants.

“The overcapacity in manufacturing is caused by slower growth in wind-farm constru

they'll soon be dumping their excess turbine production here just like they dump all their consumer production....

they'll undercut our american production... put our people out of work...

and rule the roost just like they do else where...

and our limp politicos will sit there and do nothing....

because China underwrites our entire 14 trillion dollar debt.

Another wonderful example that there is nothing quite like government control and ownership.

The problem is probably due to lack of investment in infrastructure. Transmission lines, storage capacity, switch gear, transformers, etc. are no small order. It's a big problem here also.

Windpower is still a very unstructured energy generating industry. There are companies manufacturing the hardware but the infrastructure to manage the regulation & distribution is very much lacking.

Sounds like the auto industry, more capacity than needs. Now if we could only see the light, and build a few factories here to build wind turbines, and improve the grid in unison, we would have an over built situation as they do, and we could put a lot of our auto production people back to work. No this would be doing something intelligent, instead we import the turbines from other countries, and put their people to work, and don't more forward with improving the grid.

demand is down because companies aren't getting the big checks from the government and have to pay for things themselves to get them built. just like pikens who stopped plans because he would have to use more of his money to build them.

There are problems with this article. In a command economy, does it still make sense to try to raise prices by decreasing electricity generation? Is it not having the power lines to move it or is all that coal they are not buying from the US for some other purpose? I believe it is the lies told by these types of governments, i.e., Red China, this U.S. government, etc.

Is this a glimpse of things to come with alternate energy sources. Price goes down so we'll stop producing to force price back up.. They've learned well from industrialized countries.

Why don't we sell China our coal since we have the most in the world, than we can build our own wind turbines. Or we can use all the hot air and wind out of Washington D.C.

I can't believe there are "too many [wind generation] plants" - what it means is their wind turbine production has gotten ahead of their ability to convert from fossil fuel power generation. This is the right way to go, and we should follow suit here, preferably with American manufacturing plants harnessing great plains wind. It's only a matter of time before the oil runs out, and we've known that day is coming for years. Let's not be ostriches - we should not deny that an oil supply problem exists. And that means developing alternatives.

So then why is China looking to buy coal from Australia, if they have so much reserve capacity in the wind farms that they are idling turbines?
